About visa to work in Japan

Visas are necessary to stay in Japan, and to work in Japan as well. There are various kinds of visas in Japan; with a Permanent Visa or Japanese Spouse Visa, you can work under the same conditions as Japanese people. With a Dependent Visa, there is a restriction on working hours. We will introduce three major visas here.

Working Holiday Visa

Working Holiday Visa allows you to stay in Japan for maximum one year.
Working Holiday System is based upon the agreements with affiliated countries, allowing young people from affiliated countries or regions to work in Japan in an auxiliary manner in order to supplement their traveling and staying expenses during their sightseeing purpose visits or stays. With the high degree of freedom of a Working Holiday Visa, they can work under the same conditions as Japanese people.

Student Visa

This visa is for students learning at educational institutions in Japan. Many of the students are actively working after school from evening for a short-time (3-4 hours), or only during weekends such as on Saturdays and Sundays. During long vacations, they can also have part-time jobs in resort areas away from their residences. You basically cannot work with a Student Visa. However, it is possible to work to supplement your living expenses or tuitions. To work, you will need to obtain the “Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted”.
*There is a restriction on working hours with a Student Visa; up to 28 hours a week (or 8 hours per day / 40 hours per week during longterm vacations).

Working Visa

Unlike Working Holiday and Student Visas, a Working Visa cannot be obtained on your own. You need to get a job offer from a company in Japan before applying for this visa.
In general, many of the working visas have been issued in the category of “Specialist in Engineer / Humanities / International Services”, mainly for interpreters / translators. Many holders of this visa work as interpreters at hotel receptions. This visa, issued on the premise of long-term employment, is recommended for those who want to stay in Japan for a long time, or those who want to improve their skills. It is also possible to change jobs within the same line of business.
